About This Piece
- Era: Mid-20th century vintage
- Technique: Shibori (絞り染め, tie-dyeing)
- Origin: Japan
Shibori is a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique. Sections of the silk are hand-bound, folded, or stitched before dyeing, creating intricate undyed patterns. Examples of Shibori dyeing are preserved among the 8th-century Shōsōin treasures in Nara, making it one of Japan's oldest documented textile techniques. A single piece can take weeks to complete, and the distinctive three-dimensional texture cannot be replicated by machine — it emerges naturally from the binding process itself.
A vivid vermilion-red ground is patterned with fine white shibori-style dots forming a continuous fan-shaped motif reminiscent of seigaiha (overlapping waves). The bold color and traditional repeating pattern come together for a bright, refined impression.

Care & Notes
This piece is a delicate vintage item and should be handled with care. Due to the delicate nature of silk, it should not be washed in water. If needed, we recommend gently airing it in the shade in a well-ventilated area. Small stains, soiling, fraying, or fading from the original vintage kimono fabric may remain, but these are part of the history the fabric has lived through.
