A vintage haori, hand-selected one by one by kimono specialists in Tokyo. The haori is a traditional Japanese jacket, originally worn open over a kimono.

Styling

Lightweight and versatile, it can be styled over a T-shirt or dress, or worn as a relaxed alternative to a blazer.

About This Piece

  • Era: Mid-20th century vintage
  • Technique: Shibori (絞り染め, tie-dyeing)
  • Origin: Japan

Shibori is a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique. Sections of the fabric are hand-bound, folded, or stitched before dyeing, so the undyed areas form delicate patterns. Examples of Shibori dyeing are preserved among the 8th-century Shōsōin treasures in Nara, showing it to be one of Japan's long-handed-down textile techniques. A single piece can take weeks to complete, and the distinctive three-dimensional texture — which cannot be replicated by machine — emerges naturally from the artisan's hand-binding process itself.

A striking piece in which white linear patterns and yellow and orange floral motifs stand out against a deep green ground. Its bold design, evoking abstract leaves and flowers, feels modern while conveying the warmth of nature.

Note: Kimono and haori are not designed to fit the body closely like Western clothing, so the size range is only a guide. Refer to the exact measurements above for precision.

Model Reference

Model is 165 cm (5'5"). On her, the haori falls just past the hips with a relaxed, draped silhouette.

Care & Notes

This piece is a delicate vintage item, so please handle it with care. As silk is a delicate material, please avoid washing it in water. If needed, we recommend gently airing it in the shade in a well-ventilated area. Small stains, marks, fraying, or fading originating from the vintage kimono fabric may remain, but these are part of the history the fabric has lived through.
